A Knitting Break Seems To Have Been In Order, But How Do You Know?
I knit almost every day, and I get so much out of it, but I was having trouble with a simple project, so I took a break.
Now I’m excited to get back to my knitting! But I didn’t realize I needed a break. I mean I knit every night, so it is second nature.
Visiting A Friend
I had made a vow to myself that I wouldn’t knit while I was visiting my friend, because the visit is not about me making knitting progress, it is about being present. It was pretty easy to keep the vow as our days had a different rhythm. We had meals out, we sat outside, we read the actual newspaper, and in down times, I tried to make some better SubStack connections.
Oddly, although knitting was in my purse, I didn’t take it out when we drove to San Francisco. The last night in Napa, because we were staying in a hotel not visiting, I had ripped back what I had messed up before we left. Two color work seemed beyond me just then.
Settling Into Our San Francisco Base
We stay at the same hotel in San Francisco when we visit. It has fairly large rooms, is pretty quiet, and has a kitchenette (microwave, sink, mini-dishwasher (new addition), and a refrigerator.
We can unpack completely, and I make the couch my headquarters while Mitch takes over the desk. This is our routine everywhere.

Mitch is trying to improve his walking on his foot that was broken and improperly taken care of, so we took BART to the station near our Friday dinner reservation. When we got there the restaurant was shuttered. Hmmm. We retraced our steps, but without resting, his foot was sore. We found a place near our hotel and had dinner.
I finally picked up a new knitting project on Saturday while he rested his foot after our daytime exploring. I enjoyed it and knitted until we were ready to get to BART, and knitted on BART both ways. Trina and I talked about and admired her knitting.

I thought a lot about my two knitting projects, and carried my knitting around, but didn’t touch it again.
Other Things We Did
We ate. Last night was definitely the best meal at Lihohilo Yacht Club. We also ate at The Progress and Tratto (our Friday dinner). I deeply regret that I cannot eat as much as I would like.
I read. I am about 375 pages into a 665 page book. Much of it is written in Jamaican patois, so it was hard going at first. I haven’t found a good translator, so I’m making some assumptions.
We went to SFMoma. I did the Ruth Asawa exhibit while Mitch communed with Joan Mitchell. I mostly wanted to see the sketches and other works on paper.
We also took in a fabulous photography exhibit there, as well as lots of other local photographs/photographers. I felt so good after that! Nothing like a little art to get the juices pumping.
Next I went to Britex. I bought a fantastic piece of linen for a top, a bag of sale buttons, some needles with eyes big enough to thread, and a zipper. I looked at leather but I didn’t see anything for my coat project. I didn’t look at lining, which was on my list, but I can order it when I get ready.
Returning Home
Now we’re home. I’ve unpacked all but my office stuff (that sometimes takes a day or two), but everything is in my office, or where it should be.
The usual mountain of laundry awaits.
I didn’t wear the sleeveless dress. I wore everything else. I brought extra socks, so I didn’t use those. Two tops I only wore once, and the other three, and the three pairs of pants, I wore multiple times. I didn't need the extra yarn. But just in case, I had it.
I had a big moment of clarity on our way home from the airport. Something to be processing for the next few weeks.
