New digs have been found for my blog! I started blogging here in 2012. The early blogs are pretty gruesome, but somewhere along the way I found my voice and I’ve shared a lot! A total of 732 blogs posted, more written, but not posted.
tl;dr. Read time is 4 minutes.
Only the Blog is moving! There is always a reason for making a move. Learn mine.
New Digs Streamline Processes
So why change? 2024 has been a year of figuring out what I can and can’t possibly hope to get done. I like writing blogs, but they don’t get nearly enough traffic to justify the time. I am a content creator, but I’m not visible enough.
To change that, and to simplify my life a little bit, I’ve started blogging on Substack. I will be undergoing a website remodel in 2025 to make the content there focused on the Pattern Tailor, the Shop, Education, and Techniques Library.
My education platform back end has just rebranded (oh so happy about that!) and added a really robust community platform, so I’ll be working on getting that engaged and engaging! This is all good, and I hope you’ll poke around over there too. I am setting up courses I will be offering in 2025, but you can sign up for Plan to Finish (free) and Fit Clinic (also free) right now.
The Inside Scoop, my newsletter will also be moving to Substack. See how cool that is? I can send my newsletter, have my blog, and do posts all on one platform. If you are already a subscriber to the Inside Scoop, you will automatically be moved in 2025, and you can unsubscribe whenever you wish.
Staying True to My Values
By blogging on Substack, I am also hoping to eventually disengage from Meta. I’m worried about what the Tech Giants will be up to during the 47th Administration. I’ve been off Alphabet for years, only using it when I need to if working with third parties who do use it. I’ll be looking at ways to disengage from PayPal as well.
If you don’t know, I am a bleeding heart liberal. I couldn’t be prouder of what Joe Biden has done with his presidency, and I so wanted it to go forward with Kamala Harris. I will continue to wear my pearls for her. If this troubles you, I am sorry.
I said somewhere that I live in my passions. That includes inclusion of everyone.
The knitting community is filled with people who have different identities of gender, body size, health (yep, that is now a thing. If you are chronically ill you are under threat), residency status, religions, and likely things I’m not even aware of. It is vital that we continue to serve everyone. I am not opposed to conservatism, but not as it is currently being practiced.
I grew up in a family where my dad was a republican and my mom a democrat; Jane repeated that exercise with her second husband. The only times my parents had serious disagreements (that I knew about) was about whether UC Berkeley (Jane’s alma mater) or Stanford (Dick’s, although he did not graduate) were the better school. It happened with cyclical regularity. Is it possible they played football against each other back in the 60s?
So be as conservative as you like, but do not impose your religion or hate on me or those I care about.
New Digs Streamline Processes
I have found that I get the most done when I have set processes for things. I frequently get lost in the jumping around required going to all the different places — forget where I was going and why — so hopefully this will add a modicum of efficiency that currently isn’t available. At least when I get distracted I will be in the same place!
Why Look For Me at the New Digs?
I will continue to provide excellent content, plus some fun, and pretty things. If you are looking to limit doom or other types of scrolling, it is a little easier to stay focused on Substack.
Jill Wolcott Knits Post on Substack
You will notice that I will have content that is only available to paid subscribers. Specifically, if you are a blog reader, everything will go behind a paywall six weeks after it is posted. You will have the ability to search what is behind the paywall, but only have full access if you are a paid subscriber.
I think it makes sense that content creators get some compensation, or have the ability to limit access. Jill Wolcott Knits doesn’t do ads, promote products (except my own), and have published excellent information. I don’t want to limit information if you cannot afford to support me, you will have limited-time access.
There will be other perks for paid subscribers, but I haven’t set that up yet!
